What is chronological age?
Chronological age is the exact amount of time that has passed since a person was born, measured against the calendar. Unlike a casual answer such as "she's seven", chronological age is expressed precisely — for example 7 years, 10 months and 14 days, often abbreviated in reports as 7;10.
It is different from biological age, which describes how old the body seems based on health, genetics and lifestyle. Chronological age is purely a calendar measurement, which is why it can — and must — be calculated exactly.
Who needs an exact chronological age?
- Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) — tests such as CELF-5, PPVT-5 and EVT-3 select scoring norms by the child's age on the test date. A one-month error can shift the norm table and change the outcome of an evaluation.
- School psychologists and educators — eligibility decisions, IEP meetings and grade placement often depend on age in years and months, not just completed years.
- School admissions — many districts check a child's age against a cutoff date. Our school age calculator handles that case directly.
- Parents and everyone else — for milestones, documents, visas, or simple curiosity about age in weeks or total days.
How this calculator works
The tool subtracts the birth date from the test date using the standard borrowing method — the same procedure taught to clinicians:
- Days are subtracted first. If the birth day is larger than the test day, the calculator borrows the real number of days from the previous month (28, 29, 30 or 31 — never a flat 30).
- Months are subtracted next, borrowing 12 months from the year when needed.
- Years are subtracted last, giving a final result in years, months and days.

Frequently asked questions
Why do different tools sometimes give slightly different answers?
Month lengths are uneven, so there are two defensible conventions for edge cases like Feb 28 → Mar 31. Some tools also assume every month has 30 days, which introduces errors. This calculator always uses true calendar month lengths, matching the professional borrowing method.
Does it round days into months?
No. The result shows exact days remaining after full months are counted. Some assessment manuals instruct you not to round days up — check your manual and apply its rule to the exact figures shown here.
Can I calculate age for a future test date?

What about premature babies?
